The Polish Society for Crystal Growth, abbreviated
hereafter as PSCG, was constituted during its first
general assembly held on 23 May 1991 in Czestochowa.
The general assembly formed a part of the First Polish
Conference on Crystal Growth (PCCG-I) held in the
Pedagogical University of Czestochowa during 23-24 May
1991. The PCCG-I was organised by Keshra Sangwal, then
a university professor in Czestochowa, while the PSCG
was constituted at the initiative of Anna Pajaczkowska
(then an associate professor at the Institute of
Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw) and Keshra
Sangwal.
The first general assembly accepted a draft of the
constitution for the PSCG with "Polskie Towarzystwo
Wzrostu Krysztalow (PTWK)" as its Polish name, and
Jagiellonian University, Cracow, as its headquarters.
The general assembly approved a two-year term for its
Governing Board (Zarzad Glowny) and elected the
following officers:
- Anna Pajaczkowska (Inst. Phys. PASc, Warsaw), President
- Stanislaw Hodorowicz (UJ, Cracow), President-elect (for 1993-1995)
- Waldemar Giersz (IEMT, Warsaw), Secretary
- Keshra Sangwal (Tech. Univ., Lublin), Secretary - Elect (for the term 1993-1995)
- Ryszard Kubiak (Inst. Low Temp. and Structural Res., Wroclaw), Treasurer
In addition, the following officers were elected in
the Controlling Commission (Komisja Rewizyjna) of the
PSCG:
- Stanislaw Bednarski (Inst. Atomic Energy, Swierk), Chairman
- Ewa Mielniczek (Pedagogical Univ. Czestochowa), Member
- Ewa Talik (Silesian Univ., Katowice), Member
One of the outstanding aspects of the PCCG-I was that the
inaugural lecture was called the Czochralski Lecture with
the aim of commemorating the contribution of Jan
Czochralski (Professor at the Warsaw University of
Technology during 1929 and 1945) to the field of
crystal growth. In fact this symbolic gesture was
intended to remind the younger generation of Poles that
Czochralski had roots in the Polish soil despite
inaccurate records of his origin in some of the
scientific literature and condemnation by the Polish
People's rule of his so-called collaboration during the
Nazi occupation of Poland. The Czochralski Lecture was
given by Prof. Julian Auleytner, a leading authority in
the country in the field of characterisation of
crystals by diffraction techniques. A brief sketch of
the life and scientific achievements of Prof. Jan
Czochralki was provided by Dr Pawel Tomaszewski
(Institute of Law-Temperature and Structural Research,
Wroclaw).
In terms of the number of both participants present and
scientific works presented in the conference the PCCG-I
was relatively small. In all 29 participants took part,
and 5 lectures (including the two lectures mentioned
above) and 19 oral presentations were given.
Immediately after the PCCG-I documents, signed by Anna
Pajaczkowska, Ryszard Kubiak, Stanislaw Hodorowicz,
Keshra Sangwal and Ewa Talik as the founding members of
the PSCG, for its official registration were submitted
to I Civil Department of Voivod Court in Cracow. On the
basis of the decision no. Ns. Rej. ST 39/92 of the
court PSCG was registered on 08.06.1992.
On June 1992 a one-day conference (PCCG-II) was
organised by Anna Pajaczkowska in the Institute of
Electronic Materials Technology. In this conference
only lectures were delivered. The Czochralski Lecture
was given by Prof. Cornellius S.F. Woensdregt
(University of Utrecht, The Netherlands).
PCGG-III was organised by Anna Pajaczkowska in the
Institute of Physics PASc, Warsaw, during 27-28 May
1993. During the PCCG-III the General Assembly elected
Presidentelect, Secretary-elect and Treasurer, while
the Presidentelect and Secretary-elect from the
previous elections in Czestochowa assumed the duties of
the new term of the Governing Board. Moreover,
elections for the board of Controlling Commission were
held.
Governing Board:
- Stanislaw Hodorowicz (UJ, Cracow), President
- Marian A. Herman (Inst. Phys. PASc, Warsaw), President-elect
(term 1993-1995)
- Keshra Sangwal (Tech. Univ. Lublin), Secretary
- Tadeusz Lukasiewicz (IEMT, Warsaw), Secretary-elect (term 1993-1995)
- Jan M. Olchowik (Tech. Univ. Lublin), Treasurer
Controlling Commission:
- Stanislaw Bednarski (Inst. Atomic Energy, Swierk), Chairman
- Ewa Mielniczek (Pedagogical Univ. Czestochowa), Member
- Ewa Talik (Silesian Univ., Katowice), Member
In comparison with the PCCG-I, PCCG-III was much larger
and the conference language was English. Apart from the
Czochralski Lecture by Prof. Roman Pampuch, a leading
specialist in the field of ceramics, 14 invited
lectures and 5 oral presentations were given. Moreover,
a poster session was held, in which 30 works were
presented. The total number of participants was around
90, including 8 foreign participants.
In a meeting of the Governing Board of PSCG held in
Cracow during Spring 1994 an important decision was
taken. It concerned the organisation of scientific
events by the society. It was agreed that in future
only periodically arranged conferences simultaneously
with the General Assembly of its members will have the
numbers of PCCG. All conferences and seminars during
the tenure of the Governing Board will be treated as
irregular events organised by the society.
The PCCG-IV was organised during 7-9 May 1995 by
Stanislaw Hodorowicz in the Faculty of Chemistry,
Jagiellonian University, Cracow. The Czochralski
Lecture was delivered by Prof. Andrzej Kisiel
(Jagellonian University). In the meeting of the General
Assembly some changes of farreaching consequences in
the constitution and structure of the Governing Board
were approved. The first change concerned the tenure of
officers of the Governing Board. In view of a 3-year
term for the Governing Board of International
Organisation for Crystal Growth where the Polish
Society of Crystal Growth is represented by its
president and the periodic organisation of
International Conference on Crystal Growth every third
year, the General Assembly of PSCG adopted a 3-year
term of office for its Governing Board. The second
change concerned the functioning of the society in four
sections: (1) bulk crystals, (2) crystalline
microstructure, (3) characterisation of crystals and
crystalline structures, and (4) molecular and liquid
crystals, with Prof. Anna Pajaczkowska, Prof. Maciej
Oszwaldowski, Prof. Andrzej Kisiel and Prof. Jozef
Zmija as their chairpersons, respectively. The third
change concerned a greater number of the officers of
the Governing Board. The General Assembly approved a
consitution amendment that apart from the president the
Governing Board should be represented by outgoing
president, president-elect, chairpersons of different
sections, secretary and treasurer. This amendment was
thought to be necessary keeping in mind the smooth
functioning of the society. The General Assembly also
recommended that the secretary and the treasurer should
be from the institution where the society has its
headquarters. The elections resulted in the bodies
given below.
Governing Board:
- Marian A. Herman (Inst. Vacuum Technology, Warsaw), President
- Keshra Sangwal (Techn. Univ. Lublin), President-elect (term 1998-2001)
- Stanislaw Hodorowicz (Jagiellonian Univ.), Past President
- Andrzej Olech (Jagiellonian Univ., Cracow), Secretary
- Barbara Borzecka-Prokop (Jagiellonian Univ., Cracow), Treasurer
- Anna Pajaczkowska (IEMT, Warsaw), Member
- Macej Oszwaldowski (Tech. Univ. Poznan), Member
- Andrzej Kisiel (Jagiellonian Univ., Cracow), Member
- Jozef Zmija (Military Univ. Technology, Warsaw), Member
- Tadeusz Lukasiewicz (IEMT, Warsaw), Member
Controlling Commission:
- Wojciech Sadowski (Tech. Univ. Gdansk), Chairman
- Izabela Pracka (IEMT, Warsaw), Member
- Ewa Talik (Silesian Univ., Katowice), Member
In the PCCG-IV in all 10 invited lectures and 5 short
oral presentations were given in the conference. The
poster session contained 30 works. Unfortunately,
abstracts of the works were not printed in the form of
an abstracts book. However, some papers based on the
works presented in the conference were published later
in the IEMT journal Materialy Elektroniczne (1996). The
number of particpants was about 50, including 1 from
abroad.
During the period 1995-1998 the sections on bulk
crystals and crystalline microstructures were activated
and symposia were organised by these sections. Prof.
Andrzej Kisiel felt that it was not mature to organise
a section on characterisation.
The Fifth Polish Conference on Crystal Growth (PCCG-V)
was organised during 10-14 May 1998 in Naleczow by
Keshra Sangwal. The Czochralski Lecture was delivered
by Prof. Wladyslaw Piekarczyk (Institute of Physics
PASc, Warsaw), a leading specialist in the field of
synthesis of diamond films. The meeting of the General
Assembly was held on 11 May. Among the most important
decisions taken in the meeting was a change in the
headquarters of the society from Cracow to Warsaw,
mainly due to difficulties faced by the then Governing
Board. At the suggestion of the President Prof. M.A.
Herman the General Assembly entrusted the
responsibility of activating the section on molecular
and liquid crystals to Dr. Stanis^aw Klosowicz
(Military Univ. Technology, Warsaw). During separate
meetings of the three sections chairpersons and their
deputies were elected. For the election of chairperson
and deputy chairperson a simple procedure was adopted.
Among the proposed candidates, candidate with the
highest number of votes was declared elected as the
chairperson while the one next to him as his deputy.
Thus the following was the outcome:
(a) BBulk Crystals - Prof. Wladyslaw Piekarczyk and Prof. Stanislaw Krukowski,
(b) Crystalline Microstructures - Prof. Maciej
Oszwaldowski and Dr. Zbigniew Zytkiewicz, and
(c) Molecular and Liquid Crystals - Dr. Stanislaw Klosowicz and Dr Andrzej Olech.
The lists of elected officers in the Governing Board
and the Controlling Commission are given below.
Governing Board:
- Keshra Sangwal (Tech. Univ. Lublin), President
- Anna Pajaczkowska (IEMT, Warsaw), President-Elect (term 2001-2004)
- Marian A. Herman (Inst. Vacuum Technology, Warsaw), Past-President
- Tadeusz Lukasiewicz (IEMT, Warsaw), Secretary
- Wieslaw Polak (Tech. Univ. Lublin), Technical Secretary
- Dorota Pawlak (IEMT, Warsaw), Treasurer
- Wladyslaw Piekarczyk (Inst. Phys., PASc, Warsaw), Member
- Maciej Oszwaldowski (Tech. Univ. Poznan), Member

Controlling Commission:
- Wojciech Sadowski (Tech. Univ. Gdansk), Chairman
- Krystyna Mazur (IEMT, Warsaw), Member
- Krystyna Wokulska (Silesian Univ., Katowice), Member
About 80 participants, including 20 from abroad, took part in
the PCCG-V. In all 20 invited lectures, including the
Czochralski Lecture, 15 oral presentations and 43 posters
were presented in the conference. Papers based on the works
presented in the conference were processed by Prof. Keshra
Sangwal and were published in a special issue of the
journal Crystal Research and Technology, Vol. 34 (5-6) 1999.
During the period 1998-2001 the sections on bulk crystals and
crystalline microstructures actively participated in
organising national symposia and international conferences.
However, the activities of the section on molecular and
liquid crystals remained poor. One of the most important
achievement of this duration was the organisation of the
website of the PSCG, with basic information about the
Governing Board, members of the Society and their addresses,
conferences being organised bt the PSCG, and other relevent
events. Dr Wieslaw Polak undertook and completed the ardous
task of organising the website.
The Sixth Polish Conference on Crystal Growth (PCCG-VI) was
organised during 20-23 May 2001 at the Malta Complex in
Poznan by Maciej Oszwaldowski. The Czochralski Lecture was
delivered by Prof. Bozena Hilczer (Institute of Molecual Physics
PASc, Poznan), a world-known specialist in the field of
dielectrics and ferroics. The meeting of the General
Assembly was held on 21 May. Among the important decisions
taken by the General Assembly were:
- to assess the sense of the existance of Section on
Liquid and Molecular Crystals because of its poor
activity during the previous three-year period,
- constitution of a five-member Chapter to award PSCG prizes
for distinguishing master's and doctoral theses.
At the suggestion of the Chairman of the Section on Liquid
and Molecular Crystals, Dr. Waldemar Klosowicz (Military
Univ. Technology, Warsaw), the final decision about the
abolition of the section was deferred until the organisation
of the International Conference on Liquid Crystals in
September 2001 (Note: The Section on Liquid and Molecular
Crystals was finally dissolved on 22 October 2001 during a
meeting of the Governing Board). During separate meetings of
the remaining
two sections chairpersons and their deputies were elected.
The results of these elections were the following:
a) Bulk Crystals - Prof. Marek Kozielski (Chairman) and
Prof. Keshra Sangwal (Co-chairman);
b) Crystalline Microstructures - Prof. Maciej
Oszwaldowski (Chairman) and Prof. Zbigniew Zytkiewicz (co-
chairman).

including the Czochralski Lecture by Prof. B. Hilczer,
and a special lecture on the history of crystal growth as
a science by Prof. R. Kern (France), 13 oral presentations and
over 80 posters were presented in the conference. Papers
based on the works presented in the conference were
published in a special issue of the journal Crystal
Research and Technology [Vol. 36 (8-10) 2001], with Prof. Keshra
Sangwal as its Guest Editor.
